Stefanos Tsitsipas is the 5th ranked player in the world and is the 4th seed here at the Madrid Masters. The Greek has a solid 11-3 record on the year, and has started the clay court season quite well, reaching the Quarter-Finals in Monte-Carlo and the Final in Barcelona. He will have been disappointed to lose that Final to Carlos Alcaraz, and this is an event where he has had some success in the past. He starts as the favorite over Dominic Thiem, but knows full well how dangerous his opponent is, having played him eight times before with limited success.
Dominic Thiem is unseeded here at the Madrid Masters and is ranked 93rd in the world. After a long stretch of poor results since returning from injury, he is finally showing signs of getting back to the heights he was once at. There is still a long way to go to rebuild his confidence however, and a Second Round matchup against one of the pre-tournament favorites Stefanos Tsitsipas isn’t going to help much. He dismantled Kyle Edmund 6-4, 6-1 in the First Round, and despite being the underdog, he has beaten Tsitsipas five times before and will be backing himself here.
If this match was a couple of years ago, we would be in for a blockbuster of a Second Round encounter. However, this is not the Dominic Thiem that we once knew, and while I am sure that he will eventually get back near the top of the game, it won’t happen here. Stefanos Tsitsipas is too good and too confident at the moment, and I don’t see him losing this one. It’ll be a fun match to watch, but Tsitsipas will be the winner here, moving on to the next round of the 2023 Madrid Masters.
