Iga Swiatek (7) will face Ons Jabeur in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Wimbledon CHampionships. The match is scheduled to take place on Monday July 5th, 2021 at 6:00am EST.
A huge battle is expected between two red-hot players here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Seventh seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland will face 21st seeded Tunisian Ons Jabeur in the Round of 16. Both women are seeking to reach the Quarter-Finals here at Wimbledon for the first time in their careers. Who has what it takes to keep their nerves here, and get the win to advance?
Iga Swiatek has firmly established herself as a rising star on the WTA Tour, and has been one of the standout performers over the past two years. After Winning her maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros last year, she has continued that momentum into this season. Some doubts were raised about her ability to adapt to the grass. but she has proved the doubters wrong by looking extremely solid here at Wimbledon so far. She is yet to drop a set so far at the Championships, but in fairness she is yet to truly be tested, and her next opponent Ons Jabeur should do exactly that. Swiatek is a very attacking player who has surprisingly adapted to moving on grass very well, and that combination is going to be very tough to overcome.
Ons Jabeur is ranked #24 in the WTA rankings and is the 21st seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Jabueur is one of the most consistent performers on the tour and is always a sure bet to make it deep into tournaments. While she is yet to truly translate that consistency into a run at a Major, it seems like grass could be her surface as she has produced some great performances here so far, crushing Rebecca Peterson and Venus Williams with ease in her first two matches, before stunning former champion and one of the tournament favorites Garbine Muguruza in the Third Round. The Tunisian has a unique game and is very crafty, mixing her game up nicely with a blend of power and finesse, using one of the best slices in the game today. While she is the underdog here against Iga Swiatek, there certainly is some upset potential here at Wimbledon.
This is shaping up to be an extremely close match, and it really can go either way. Swiatek is a very aggressive player who plays little defense unless totally necessary, while the Jabeur’s game (especially her slice) will be very effective on this quicker surface even though she lacks the tools her opponent has. This truly will be a test for both players, and it will come down to who is better tactically on the day. After considering all the factors, I am going with Iga Swiatek here. While Ons Jabeur is a very tough player on this surface, the Pole still has more firepower than her opponent and I think that the extra “free” points that she will win will be decisive here. It could possibly go three sets, but expect Iga Swiatek to win and advance to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
