UFC 269: Santiago Ponzinibbio vs Geoff Neal Picks, Predictions, Odds

Geoff Neal and Santiago Ponzinibbio fight Saturday in UFC 269 at the T-Mobile Arena. Neal enters this fight with a 13-4 record and has won 62 percent of his fights by knockout. Ponzinibbio enters this fight with a 28-4 record and has won 54 percent of his fights by knockout.

Neal has won seven of his last nine fights and is coming off a May loss to Neil Magny. Neal is averaging 4.42 significant strikes per minute, with an accuracy percentage of 48 percent. Neal is averaging 0.60 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 50 percent. Neal is coming off a decision loss at UFC on ESPN 24 where he landed 37 total strikes and ate 89 total strikes. After back-to-back losses, Neal looks for his first victory since UFC 245. Neal is 6-2 under the UFC banner. Neal is primarily a stand-up striker with powerful hands and has been a knockout artist since his amateur days. Neal puts together combinations nice and clean, and he also has a kicking ability that also can’t be ignored. A blue belt in BJJ, Neal has defended takedowns at a very high level up to this point, so he’s forcing guys to fight his fight, and he’s going to be very comfortable as long as he can stay on his feet. This will be Neal’s fifth career fight in Nevada.

Ponzinibbio has won eight of his last nine fights and is coming off a June win over Miguel Baeza. Ponzinibbio is averaging 4.65 significant strikes per minute, with an accuracy percentage of 40 percent. Ponzinibbio is averaging 0.46 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 36 percent. Ponzinibbio is coming off a decision win at UFC Fight Night 189 where he landed 122 total strikes and 44 percent of his significant strikes. The bout earned fight of the night honors, which is the fourth time Ponzinibbio has earned a performance bonus. Ponzinibbio is an aggressive volume striker who uses his legs well and has a reach of 73 inches. A black belt in BJJ, Ponzinibbio has produced knockouts in 15 of his 28 victories, and his victory over Neil Magny a few years ago put everyone on notice. This will be Ponzinibbio’s third career fight in Nevada.

This should be a fun fight between two powerful strikers who are at their best on their feet. There’s a good chance somebody is going to get knocked out here. Ponzinibbio is probably the more complete fighter overall given his higher level of BJJ, but we’re getting plus money with Neal, who is the bigger fighter with a two-inch reach advantage. Neal is also the more accurate striker, and his takedown defense gives confidence he can keep this thing on the feet. There’s value here with Neal and the slight plus money. I’ll take it.
