The New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury face off on Wednesday night in a WNBA basketball showdown at the Barclays Center. These two teams faced off once earlier this year and it was the Liberty that were able to win 85-83.
The New York Liberty come into this game with an 11-14 record overall which puts them in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference. The New York Liberty have been super inconsistent this season and they have lost two games in a row. In the last game against the Los Angeles Sparks the defense gave up 86 points and that led to the defeat. The Liberty come into this game averaging 79.6 points per game while their defense is giving up 85.4 points per game. Betnijah Laney comes into this game averaging 17.8 points while shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from behind the three-point line. Sabrina Ionescu has been a bit inconsistent this season, and if they want to take the next step forward, she is going to need to be a big reason why.
On the other side of this matchup is the Phoenix Mercury who sit with a 13-10 record overall which puts them in 4th place in the Western Conference. The Mercury are playing some really good basketball right now having won four games in a row. In the last game against the Atlanta Dream, the Mercury’s offense was elite scoring 84 points and that led to the victory. Phoenix is averaging 80.6 points per game while their defense is giving up 80.1 points per game. Brittney Griner has been the best player for Phoenix averaging 20.5 points while shooting 57.6 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from behind the three-point line.
The Mercury are the better team, but I expect it’s going to be a close game that the Liberty find success in. The Liberty might not come away with a victory, but they are going to do enough to cover the spread.
