The Seattle Storm and Phoenix Mercury face off on Friday in a WNBA basketball showdown at the Angel of the Winds Arena. . These two teams last faced off on July 11th and it was the Storm winning 82-75.
The Seattle Storm sit with a 20-11 record overall which puts them in 3rd place in the Western Conference. As of late, the Storm have been inconsistent and the last two games have been a perfect example. Two games ago against the Washington Mystics the Storm won 105-71 but in the last game they lost to the Los Angeles Sparks 81-53. One of the big reasons the Storm struggled in the last game was Breanna Stewart wasn’t with the team, and she is out for the rest of the regular season. Sue Bird also didn’t find a whole lot of success scoring and if they want to win this game, they need more help from Bird and the rest of the starters. Jewell Lloyd is the top player that is available for this game and she is averaging 17.3 points per game.
On the other side of this matchup is the Phoenix Mercury who sit with a 19-11 record overall which puts them in 4th place in the Western Conference. The Mercury had won ten games in a row before losing their last game against the Sun. In the last game the Mercury only scored 67 points. Phoenix is averaging 81.9 points per game while their defense is giving up 78.9 points per game. Brittney Griner is the star of this team averaging 20.8 points while shooting 57.8 percent from the field. Diana Taurasi who is also a key player for this team won’t be with the team for this game.
The Storm lean on Stewart and without her, I expect they are going to struggle again. I expect Griner is going to have a big game, and the Storm aren’t going to have an answer for her. Look for the Storm’s offense to struggle, and Phoenix will cover the spread.
