The Dallas Wings and Atlanta Dream meet Sunday in WNBA action at the IMG Academy.
The Dallas Wings have lost seven of their last eight games and are coming off a 10-win season. The Wings stocked up on draft capital and are clearly building for the future, and they enter this season as an extremely young squad. Arike Ogunbowale is a star in the making after what she did her rookie season and Satou Sabally is one of the better rookies in this years class. It’s going to be nice to see Moriah Jefferson back on the court given her long injury history and Katie Lou Samuelson should play better in a friendlier situation with more minutes. Allisha Gray is also anther young player starting to come into her own and could be a key piece to these Wings in their rebuilding project.
The Atlanta Dream have lost 16 of their last 19 games and are coming off an eight-win season. The Dream are going to look a lot different this season with no more Angel McCoughtry or Alex Bentley, and with Renee Montgomery and Tiffany Hayes sitting this season out. This season should be all about rookie Chennedy Carter, who is now the face of the Dream and is somebody with explosive scoring ability. Courtney Williams was also one of the key players last season in the Connecticut Sun making it to the WNBA Finals and can get hot from deep in a hurry. Glory Johnson is a veteran who comes over from Dallas and is capable of consistent double doubles and Elizabeth Williams is a solid post presence and one of the top shot blockers in the league last season. Patience, Dream fans, patience.
These were the two worst teams in the league last season along with the New York Liberty, but they both have young talent and emerging pieces capable of producing a turnaround rather quickly. The difference for me is that the Atlanta Dream have slightly more depth overall, added a player in Williams capable of leading a team right away and have Carter who is a walking bucket and a candidate for Rookie of the Year. The Dream won’t be the worst team in the league this season and you can bet on that.
Give me the Dream in this contest.
