Tennessee Volunteers Vs. Georgia Bulldogs 10/8/11
Mitch’s Free College Football Pick Against the Spread
The Tennessee Volunteers and the Georgia Bulldogs meet for a classic SEC East matchup on Saturday Night.
The Tennessee Volunteers are looking to get back on the college football map and second year Head Coach Derek Dooley appears to have them headed in that direction. The Vols are 3-1 but the one loss is their only SEC game, a 10 point loss at Florida. Tyler Bray has done as nice job at QB thus far completing 68.5 percent of his passes for 1328 yards with 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Tauren Poole is keeping up the Tennessee tradition at running back with a 4.5 yards per carry average for 318 yards and a touchdown. Da’Rick Rogers leads the UT receivers with 27 catches for 442 yards and six touchdowns and Justin Hunter has 17 catches for 314 yards and two scores. The Tennessee defense has just one interception but they have four fumble recoveries and six sacks. Austin Johnson is Tennessee’s leading tackler with 23 followed by Curt Maggitt with 19 and A.J. Johnson with 17. While the Volunteers have had a nice start with some gaudy offensive numbers they failed their first test in the SEC and will need to play well to pass this one.
The Georgia Bulldogs’ season looked like it may be headed for disaster after they dropped their first two games but since them Mark Richt’s team has bounced back winning their next three games. This is the third conference game for UGA as they have defeated Mississippi and Mississippi State the past two weeks. Aaron Murray is still improving at QB as he has completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 1100 yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. Super freshman Isaiah Crowell is averaging 5.2 yards per carry for 515 yards with two touchdowns. Malcolm Mitchell is Georgia’s leading receiver with 22 catches for 312 yards and three touchdowns, Orson Charles has 16 catches for 256 yards and four touchdowns, and Tavarres King has 12 catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns. The Bulldog defense has eight interceptions, three fumble recoveries, and 10 sacks on the year. Jarvis Jones and Michael Gilliard lead the Dawgs with 28 tackles each while Sanders Commings and Christian Robinson have 22 each. Without games against LSU or Alabama this season Georgia has a schedule that can land them in the SEC title game with a strong last seven games.
Tennessee is 4-0-1 against the spread in their last five conference games, 4-1-1 against the spread in their last six home games, and 1-5 in their last six games as a home underdog. Georgia is 7-2 against the spread in their last nine games as a favorite, 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five games as a favorite of up to three points, and 5-16 against the spread against a team with a winning record. The underdog has covered five of the last seven times in this series and Georgia is 1-4 against the spread int ehri last five against Tennessee.
With 27 touchdown passes between these two QB’s we can expect plenty of airing it out and with Poole and Crowell solid attacks on the ground as well. With the total set at 56.5 this one should have no problem going over. I also have a play on who will cover the spread and I’ll post that in the Premium Area.
Mitch’s Pick: Over 53.5
