Alcorn State had a pretty dismal overall record at just 6-13 overall last year, but the team didn’t do too badly in SWAC play. The Braves finished at 6-7 in the conference, which left them in sixth place ahead of Alabama A&M, Alabama State, AR-Pine Bluff and MS Valley State.
The Braves had six non-conference games canceled last season, leading to an 0-5 finish before the SWAC schedule. Alcorn State had a couple of small winning streaks in conference play, but ultimately lost 78-55 to Texas Southern in the Quarterfinals of the SWAC Tournament.
Over on the Washington State side, their overall record last season was 14-13, with a 7-12 mark in Pac-12 Conference games. The Cougars couldn’t do much in the standings of such a talented conference, and were ahead of only Washington and California at season’s end.
Washington State started the year on a nice 8-0 run, but couldn’t win more than two consecutive games for the rest of the season. The Cougars’ Pac-12 Tournament run didn’t last long, with a 64-59 loss to Arizona State in the first round.
PICK: I’m probably going to try Washington State. The Cougars have been an afterthought in basketball for quite some time, and it’s been a while (13 years) since we’ve seen them in the national tournament. Some people are thinking that could change in 2021-22 however, as Washington State boasts a nice crop of big men headlined by All-Pac-12-favorite Noah Williams. It’s a well-rounded group, and we could see some interesting lineup combinations this year. If the Cougars can find some chemistry and get those turnovers in check they’ll be in business.
