The Los Angeles Angels and the Detroit Tigers meet Friday in MLB action from Comerica Park. The Angels are coming off a series versus the Mariners. LA didn’t have any luck in that set, falling in a sweep. As for the Tigers, they just finished up against the Guardians. Detroit managed a split four-game series there. The Angels took a 6-2 loss to the Mariners in their Monday opener, then lost 8-2 in the Tuesday matchup. LA fell once again on Wednesday with a 11-7 result despite six runs over the last five frames. Starter Touki Toussaint gave up four earned in 2.2 innings on three hits and four walks.
For the starting pitcher job Friday, the Angels will send out Patrick Sandoval. In his 19 starts so far Sandoval is 3-8 with a 3.42 ERA. Over 100.0 innings total he has 38 earned on 100 hits and 49 walks with 106 Ks.
Over on the Tigers’ side, they had mixed results versus the Guardians this week. Detroit lost 4-1 Monday, then took victories 7-5 and 4-3 over the next pair. On Wednesday in the finale, the Tigers eventually fell 8-4, giving up six runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Starter for the Tigers on Friday will be Matt Manning. Across his five starts this year Manning has a 3.24 ERA without a decision. In 25.0 innings he has nine earned, 25 hits, eight walks and 17 Ks.
The Angels are 4-1 in their last five versus the AL Central and 21-54 in their last 75 Friday games. LA is 24-50 in their last 74 overall.
Meanwhile, the Tigers are 19-47 in their last 66 Friday games and 8-25 in their last 33 on grass. Detroit is 1-4 in the last five after an off day.
PICK: I’m going to stay with the Angels here. Sandoval is 0-2 over his last three starts, but he hasn’t been playing too badly. In 16.0 combined frames, Sandoval has just four earned on 12 hits and 10 walks during that time. As for Manning, he’s given up seven earned over his last 17.0 innings in three starts. Should be a fun starter matchup; this one should be fairly close early.
