The Pirates look to even their series with the Dodgers at PNC Park on Tuesday night.
The Dodgers improved to 56-45 on the year with a win in Pittsburgh on Monday night as the team overcame injuries to Hanley Ramirez and Yasiel Puig to amass 10 hits and five runs off of Pirates starter Edinson Volquez, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the 4th inning and never looking back. Starter Hyun-Jin Ryu picked up the win with yet another impressive road performance, allowing two runs over seven innings of work. LA failed to make up any ground in the NL West with the win as the Giants also emerged victorious in Philadelphia, leaving the California rivals knotted atop the division. On Tuesday the Dodgers will start Josh Beckett who is having a career year at the age of 34. While some analysts expected the veteran to slow down after his no hitter on May 25th, Beckett has continued his strong pitching entering this matchup with a WHIP of 1.03 and ERA of 2.26. Beckett has actually been stronger on the road than at home which is puzzling considering the pitcher-friendly nature of Chavez Ravine, but the phenomenon is consistent with the performance of his team which is also better on the road at 31-21 on the year.

The Pirates swept the Rockies coming out of the All-Star break but a more talented NL West team proved too much to overcome in the series opener on Monday. The Pirates dropped to 2.5 games back in the NL Central with the loss as the Brewers took sole possession of first place in the division with their win over a reeling Reds team. The Pirates will look to close their series with LA strong before hitting the west coast for a ten game trip on Friday, and they’ll once again turn to surprise starter Vance Worley on Tuesday night. The young righty has turned in respectable performances in four of his five starts this year, sitting with a 1.13 WHIP and 3.38 ERA coming into this matchup. The Pirates own a strong home record at 32-21 and will be looking for a positive result here with the Cardinals and Brewers both playing winnable home series' against the Rays and Reds respectively.
The Pirates managed to beat Beckett and the Dodgers in LA on May 30th but it wasn’t overly convincing as the final score was just 2-1. Worley has done a decent job in a fill-in role but I give the Dodgers the edge on the mound and getting plus money with a solid road team is the only way to look in this matchup in my opinion. The Pirates figure to be a much better bet on Wednesday facing a weaker link in this Dodger rotation in Dan Haren.
