The Atlanta Hawks picked the wrong time to have a poor game with a five-game road trip ahead of them, beginning in Los Angeles against the Lakers on Tuesday.

The Hawks never had a chance on Sunday against the Miami Heat, getting outplayed at home and on national television. Atlanta got outscored 63-41 in the first half, trailed by as many as 32 points and simply gave up in front of their home crowd.

The Heat, empathically dominated the Hawks on the way to a 107-87 win. Miami outrebounded Atlanta 52-38 and dominated in the paint, outscoring Atlanta 44-28.

Without Al Horford, Chris Bosh, LeBron James and Joel Anthony dominated the Hawks on the interior. Miami’s starting frontcourt outrebounded Atlanta’s starting frontcourt 33-19. As a team, Atlanta had 38 rebounds in the game.

Willie Green was the only bright spot, leading the Hawks with 17 points off of the bench. Joe Johnson and Josh Smith combined for only 20 points, and point guard Jeff Teague scored just six points and had only two assists. Marvin Williams also did not give Atlanta’s starting lineup any offense or defense. He scored only six points and had just three rebounds. James nearly had triple-double, finishing with 23 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.

The Lakers get to return home and play at Staples Center for the first time since in the month of February. Los Angeles’ troubles on the road continue, barely escaping Air Canada Centre with a 94-92 win against the 9-20 Toronto Raptors.

Kobe Bryant played the role of hero again for the Los Angeles, scoring six points in the final minute of the game after the Lakers had blown an 18-point lead.

The return to Staples Center should help ignite the team. The Lakers are 11-2 at home, in large part to a stingy defense. Los Angeles is only giving up 85.2 points, the best in the Western Conference.

Another key to the Lakers success at home, the play of their role plays. Together, Steve Blake and Matt Barnes are combining for 18 points a game and 47.2 percent shooting at Staples Center. When on the road, they are combining for 10 points a game and shooting 34.9 percent.

Besides having to play the Lakers in Los Angeles, the Hawks are having little success against winning teams this season. In Atlanta’s 18 wins on the season, 13 of them have come against teams with sub-.500 records. On the flip side, nine of Atlanta’s 10 losses have come against winning teams.

The icing on the cake for the Lakers is the tall, overpowering combination of Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. The Hawks have absolute no answer for either Gasol or Bynum because of their lack of depth at the position. If Bosh, Anthony and James can almost outrebound the entire Hawks, Gasol and Bynum should have no trouble getting rebounds and second-chance points.

The Hawks are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four road games, and are 4-1 ATS in their last five games as an underdog of 5.0-10.5. The Lakers are 6-0 ATS in their last six Tuesday games. The Under is 7-0 in Atlanta’s last seven Tuesday games, and the Under is 4-0 in Lakers last four home games following a road trip of seven or more days. Head-to-head the home team is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings.

John’s Pick: LA Lakers -5.5
