The Islanders continue their Western Canada road trip as they travel from Edmonton to Calgary to take on the Flames on Friday night.

The Islanders were the talk of the trade deadline as two huge moves involving them both directly and indirectly highlighted an active day involving a ton of marquee players. General Manager Garth Snow was under intense scrutiny after it looked as though they weren’t going to trade pending unrestricted free agent Thomas Vanek but at the very last moment he struck a deal with the Canadiens who sent back a prospect and draft picks. Matt Moulson, who was traded off of Long Island to acquire Vanek was also dealt to the Minnesota Wild leaving the two parties on their third teams of the season and the Islanders with virtually nothing to show for it. However, the Isles put all of the off ice distractions aside and went into Edmonton and played a pretty solid contest that they are leading by a 2-0 count in the third period at the time of writing. They will look for another victory as they travel a few hours south of Edmonton to Calgary to take on the Flames.

Calgary Flames vs. New York Islanders - 3/7/14

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sport

Calgary is playing their second consecutive contest in which their opponents played the night before in Edmonton and they’ll be looking for a similar result this time around as they did earlier in the week against Ottawa. The Flames will not be going to the playoffs this season but they certainly haven’t played like the team many thought they would as they are in a rebuilding mode with a ton of pieces likely to be moved around in the summer. Many thought that management would trade away Mike Cammalleri but he is still in Cow Town and will be at least until season’s end but the Flames will play out the string looking to play spoiler and so far they have done a great job in doing so. Calgary has won 6 of their last 10 games including Wednesday night’s triumph over the Senators and in this spot I think they’re absolutely worth a play on home ice and with the Isles winning in Edmonton I think we will get the line down a few spots closer to where it’s playable.
