The Stars return home for their first contest after the scary Rich Peverley incident on Friday night as they host the Calgary Flames.
The Flames were playing their best hockey of the season over the last couple of weeks once action resumed from the Olympic break in Sochi and while they’re just 5-5 in their last 10 contests it doesn’t resonate with how well the team has actually played. Calgary is a team in transition that came into the season knowing they were going to be hard pressed to make the playoffs and while the fans may not see the bigger picture it is a crucial step in the redevelopment process. The Flames have some young prospects mainly in the form of Sean Monahan who would have been the in Calder race for rookie of the year had he not gotten injured but another top draft pick could send the Flames along the track a lot faster than expected. Calgary is also rumored to make a splash in free agency this summer and acquire one of the three top end free agents in James Reimer, Jaroslav Halak, or Jonas Hiller.

The Stars went on the road a night after one of their teammates had a life altering cardiac event that left the entire hockey world in silence and played for their fallen brother in what was an inspirational and winning effort. Rich Peverley has since addressed the media and is in stable condition but will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the season which removes a winning attitude and playoff experience from their active roster but his health is the most important thing at the moment. The Stars played very well against the Blues and while a large part of it could have been the context they are still a good team and have more than a fighting chance to lock up a playoff spot. The play a Flames team here who has been tough to put away and always seems to give it maximal effort but the Stars are at home and need a win in a big way and I think the crowd will provide the extra energy in the building.
