The Avalanche look to secure their first win of the season on Monday as they head into the TD Garden to take on the Boston Bruins.
The Avs were the talk of the league last season as they went from being the game’s worst team to finishing third overall in the standings in what was one of the best turnarounds in NHL history all under the guidance of new head coach Patrick Roy. Despite losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Minnesota Wild and the first two games of the season to that same foe there is a lot of optimism in Colorado as the Avs are a year older and as such more prepared to handle adversity. Colorado caught a lot of breaks last season and it is only realistic to assume they will regress a bit this year but they are a still a surefire candidate to make the postseason and they should be competitive all season. The Avs always seem to have a strong record on the road and they’ll look to get their first win of the year against a Bruins team that has lost two of their first three games. Semyon Varlamov is expected to start in goal for Colorado while Tuukka Rask will go for the Bruins.

The Bruins haven’t exactly looked like world beaters so far through the first three games of the season but it is way too early to press the panic button in Boston though I do think they are going to experience a bit of a regression this season. The B’s are well known for their physical style of play and defense first mentality but I think some teams are catching on to their game plan and with some of the losses they experienced in the offseason I think that Boston can be beaten and will be hard pressed to get back to the Cup finals this year. With that being said they should most certainly be a playoff team once again and will challenge for the division title especially if Rask can maintain his strong play. However, they face an Avs team who has a ton of skill and speed and match up quite well with the Bruins and with the price Colorado is getting here I think they’re well worth a play despite Boston always being a tough out at home.
