The Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers will play early Thursday afternoon. The Indians won the first game on Wednesday, 3-2 thanks to a solid outing from Zach McAllister.
With the win, the Indians get back to a .500 record, but have still lost four of their last six games. Surprisingly, a lot of the Indians struggles have come from a pitching staff that has allowed seven or more runs in four of their seven losses this season. One pitcher who has struggled out the gate is Danny Salazar, who is 0-1 on the season with an ERA of 6.75 and has walked five batters in 9.1 innings. Salazar is 0-0 with a 2.63 ERA in two career starts against the Tigers.
USA TODAY Sports
The Tigers have lost three of their last four games and are having a hard time scoring runs. The Tigers have been held to two or less runs in their last three loses, and Miguel Cabrera is batting just .227 so far this season. Good thing for Detroit fans is that the Tigers won’t need much run support with Justin Verlander on the mound Thursday. Verlander is 1-1 this season with an ERA of 2.57, and he has 12 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched. Verlander is 17-14 with a 4.38 ERA in 35 career starts against the Indians. The Indians are the most faced team in Verlander’s career.
The Indians are 13-6 in their last 19 road games and 1-4 in Salazar's last 5 starts vs. a team with a winning record. The Tigers are 37-14 in Verlander's last 51 home starts vs. a team with a losing record and 62-26 in Verlander's last 88 home starts. The Tigers are 14-6 in Verlander's last 20 starts vs. Indians.
The Tigers need a win in the worst way and have their best chance to get it with Verlander on the mound. Also, don't expect Detroit's offense to be in this funk for long. Salazar hasn't gotten off to the best start, and I expect him to struggle in this game as well.
