Lorenzo Sonego of Italy will face Hungarian Marton Fucsovics in the First Round of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters event in Monaco. The match is scheduled to be played on Tuesday April 13th, 2021 at 8:00am EST.
This is an interesting First Round match here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters between two players that have been in good form so far in 2021. There is not much to separate the two in the rankings, and they both play an aggressive baseline game. It s set to be one of the more exciting matches of the First Round. Will it be the Italian who is fresh off his second ATP Title win in Sardinia? Or the always-solid Hungarian?
Lorenzo Sonego is currently ranked a career high #28 in the ATP world rankings and has been in fantastic form lately. He won the Sardegna Open in impressive fashion, defeating Taylor Fritz in the Semis and Laslo Djere in the Finals in two impressive three set wins to claim the title. His confidence will be sky-high after that win and he will be very difficult to beat here, with his attacking baseline game. While he is in great form, he must be wary of his opponent Marton Fucsovics who is a very solid player and certainly has a chance to win here.
Marton Fucsovics is currently ranked #40 in the world and has been very impressive so far in 2021. He boasts a strong 13-5 record so far this season, including reaching the Final in Rotterdam, and Quarter-Finals appearances in Doha and Dubai. His strengths are his all-around game and his elite fitness, so he will be a very difficult opponent for the Italian as he will be more well-rested. He enters this match as the slight underdog but has the game to cause the upset here.
This is set to be a very close match, and three sets is likely. While Sonego i in the better form, I am backing Marton Fucsovics to win here. He has a 3-1 head to head lead over the Italian and seems to have his number. He has the type of all-around game to wear Sonego down, and is slightly more consistent from the baseline. Expect a huge battle, but the Hungarian should come out on top.
