The San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks meet Thursday in MLB action from Chase Field. The Giants are coming off a two-game set versus the Dodgers. San Francisco dropped both of those games and have now lost three in a row. As for the Diamondbacks, they played the Cardinals this week. Arizona lost the first two games in that set, then on Wednesday the Diamondbacks fell again. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.

The Giants didn’t fare well versus the Dodgers this week, costing 3-2 Monday and 3-1 Tuesday. In the Tuesday loss, starting pitcher Kevin Gausman put up 5.0 innings and four Ks with three earned on three hits and five walks.

For the starter job in the Thursday game, the Giants will send out Johnny Cueto. Over his 67.0 innings this year Cueto has 73 hits, 29 runs (27 earned), eight homers allowed, 12 walks, 53 Ks and a 3.63 ERA overall.

Over on the Diamondbacks’ side, they fell 7-1 on Monday and 3-2 on Tuesday to the Cardinals. In the Wednesday finale, Arizona made the sweep complete with a 7-4 loss. Riley Smith managed 3.0 innings with four earned on seven hits.

For the starter job in the Thursday game, the Diamondbacks will go with Merrill Kelly. Over his 91.1 innings this year, Kelly has 93 hits, 51 runs (48 earned), 12 homers, 25 walks, 82 Ks and a 4.73 ERA.

The Giants are 9-0 in their last nine after an off day and 5-1 in their last six Thursday games. San Francisco is 20-7 in their last 27 in game one of a series and 10-4 in their last 14 overall.

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are 0-6 in their last six Thursday games and 7-46 in their last 53 overall. Arizona is 7-20 in their last 27 home games and 7-19 in their last 26 in game one of a series.

PICK: I suppose I’m sticking with the Giants. Cueto is coming off what’s probably his best start of the year, going 7.0 innings with five hits, zero earned, one walk and six Ks versus the A’s. Cueto had a run of 10 earned in 15.2 innings across three starts prior to that, giving up six homers in that span. If he can keep the ball down I don’t think Cueto will have too many issues putting San Francisco in a winning position.
