The United States Women’s soccer team and Australia face off on Tuesday in their third game of the Olympics. These two teams are tied for second place in Group G, with the United States holding the advantage because of goal differential.
The US knows their job is simple on Tuesday, if they win or play to a draw they are moving on, but if they lose, their Olympics will be over. The United States really struggled in their opening game of the Olympics against Sweden, losing 3-0, but in the last game, they were much more impressive, winning 6-1. Rose Lavelle opened up the scoring in the 9th minute, and they never looked back in the victory. Alex Morgan was the last goalscorer in the 88th minute, and every goal was scored by a different player. The defense at times in that last game showed lapses, and they need to continue to clean that up as they go forward. If the United States struggles, with the defense, they are going to have all kinds of issues coming away with the victory, and their Olympics could be ended early.
On the other side of this matchup is Australia who won their opening game of the Olympics 2-1 over New Zealand, before losing their last game against Sweden 4-2. This is a team that has defensive issues and that is going to need to be cleaned up in a big way in this game. Sam Kerr is the best player for Australia, and in the last game against Sweden, she was the only goal scorer, scoring each of the two goals.
The United States offense is going to find success again in this game, but I also expect Australia to add a goal or two. The over 4.5 is +180, and that is going to be the play in this match.
