US Open: Daniil Medvedev vs. Richard Gasquet 8/30/21 Tennis Prediction

Second seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev will face the unseeded Richard Gasquet of France in the First Round of the 2021 US Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Monday August 30th, 2021 at 8:45pm EST.

Danill Medvedev is the second seed here at the 2021 US Open and is one of the main contenders for the title along with Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas and ALexander Zverev. The big Russian has been incredibly consistent at the big events over the past few seasons but is still seeking his first Grand Slam title. Could this be the year? First up in his path is the veteran Richard Gasquet, an opponent that will make him think in the First Round. Can the Frenchman pull off the unlikely upset? Or will Medvedev march on as expected?

Daniil Medvedev is ranked #2 on the ATP Tour and is the second seed here at the 2021 US Open. The Russian has been having an outstanding season and will be expecting to make a deep run here, and anything less than winning the title will be viewed as a disappointment. He has been a Finalist here before, and will be hoping to go one step further and lift his maiden Grand Slam trophy. Medvedev has some serious momentum behind him as he won the title at the Rogers Cup and reached the Semis in Cincinnati, so he will be a force to be reckoned with here. He is the big favorite here against the French veteran Richard Gasquet and is expected to make quick work of his opponent, although he certainly shouldn’t underestimate him as his experience could make him difficult to handle at times.

Richard Gasquet is ranked #82 in the world rankings and is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open. After spending much of his career in the top 20, he has seen his ranking and form decline in recent seasons as he approaches the end of a highly successful career. He is still capable of some solid tennis and has had some good wins this season, but they have been few and far between. Unfortunately he has been handed a very difficult draw here in New York, and will face world number two Daniil Medvedev who is a prime candidate for the title here. Gasquet will have to summon every ounce of his experience and remaining energy to make this match even remotely competitive and is the massive underdog here.

This is the third time that the two players have faced each other on the ATP Tour and even though the head to head series is tied at 1-1 I am expecting this encounter to be rather short. Simply put, Richard Gasquet is not the player that he once was and is far from the required level to defeat the world number two Daniil Medvedev. I expect the Russian to dominate this match from start to finish, advancing to the Second Round here at the 2021 US Open in very comfortable fashion.
