US Open: Matteo Berrettini vs. Corentin Moutet 9/2/21 Tennis Prediction
Matteo Berrettini vs Corentin Moutet
September 2, 2021 12:00 am EDT
Sixth seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini will face the unseeded Corentin Moutet of France in the Second Round of the 2021 US Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Thursday September 2nd, 2021 at a time yet to be determined.
Matteo Berrettini has always been a very talented player with good results, but he had a reputation of being very inconsistent. This season he is having a breakout year most notably his impressive runs to the Finals in Madrid and Wimbledon. He has shown that he is ready to contend for big titles such as this one at the 2021 US Open and should be considered a dark horse candidate to win it all. Can the talented but inconsistent Corentin Moutet break his momentum and cause the massive upset here in New York?
Matteo Berrettini is the sixth seed here at the 2021 US Open and is the 8th ranked player on the ATP Tour. The Italian star is breaking out before our eyes, and has taken his game to another level. He always bad a big serve and huge game, but it seems to be the improvement in his mental game that has transformed him into the consistent performer that he is today. He has started well here at the US Open, defeating the tough veteran Jeremy Chardy in straight sets to begin his campaign. When he is playing well and his confidene is high he can beat anybody, as he is able to dominate opponents from the baseline and with his serve. He is the big favorite here against Corentin Moutet and it will be nothing short of a shock if he were to lose here.
Corentin Moutet is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #88 in the world. The Frenchman is a very talented player but has struggled to string consistent results together over the past few seasons. Since April he has only won two main draw matches on the ATP Tour, and entered New York on a five match losing streak. He was able to break that run with a solid straight sets win over Stefano Travaglia in the First Round, which would have been a huge relief for him and allowed him to regain some confidence. He is a tricky lefty with solid groundstrokes, but tends to overhit the ball at times and can be very erratic. If everything is clicking for him then he may be able to cause the Italian a couple issues, but it is highly unlikely that he will be able to sustain anything near the required level to compete here. He is the massive underdog here and it will take the performance of his lifetime to make this competitive.
This will be the first time that the two players will face each other on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting nothing less than a dominant, straight sets win for Matteo Berrettini. The Italian has transformed into one of the best players in the world, and I think that he can go very deep here in New York. Moutet is extremely talented but he does not have the physical nor mental capacity to outlast the Italian over five sets. It won’t even get that far, as I expect Berrettini to come out firing and will dominate this match from start to finish, advancing to the Third Round here at the 2021 US Open.
