The Troy Trojans meet the Georgia Southern Eagles Saturday in Sun Belt college football week 6 action from Troy University Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Eagles are fresh off a matchup versus Arkansas State. In that game Georgia Southern cruised to a big victory. As for Troy, they played South Carolina in their last game. Georgia Southern managed a nice 30-25 victory over Gardner-Webb to kick off the season in week one. The Eagles stumbled on offense over their next pair with losses 38-6 to Florida Atlantic and 45-10 to Arkansas, then lost again to Louisiana 28-20 in week four.
Last weekend versus Arkansas State, Georgia Southern scored double-digits in every quarter on the way to a 59-33 victory. The Eagles did their damage on the ground, as Logan Wright posted 208 yards with two scores and Jalen White had 157 rush yards and a pair of TDs as well.
Over on the Troy side, they drilled Southern U in their opener this year 55-3. The Trojans then lost 21-13 to Liberty before a solid win over Southern Miss 21-9 in week four. After that came a rough loss to LA-Monroe 29-16 that moved the Trojans back to .500 on the year.
In game five versus South Carolina, Troy gave up points in every quarter during a 23-14 loss. QB Taylor Powell had 148 yards and two interceptions on 21-of-37 passing, and BJ Smith led the rushers with 19 carries for 105 yards and a TD.
GA Southern is 6-2 ATS in their last eight on turf and 5-2 ATS in their last seven conference games. The Eagles are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games as well.
Meanwhile, the Trojans are 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 home games versus a team with a losing road record and the under is 4-0 in their last four overall. The under is 7-3 in Troy’s last 10 conference games.
PICK: I’m going with Georgia Southern. The Eagles put up a healthy 540 yards of offense last weekend, with a whopping 503 of those coming on the ground. Georgia Southern gave up 534 yards on the other side with 33 first downs, but their offense kept the Red Wolves at bay.
As for Troy, they put up 21 first downs on Saturday but also had a tepid 4.4-yards-per-play average and four turnovers. I like the Trojans to play a little sharper in this one, but it’s probably still the Eagles’ cover.
