The Evansville Purple Aces and Cincinnati Bearcats meet Tuesday in college basketball action at the Fifth Third Arena. The Evansville Purple Aces won nine games last season and enter the second year under coach Todd Lickliter. The Cincinnati Bearcats won 12 games last year and will make the coaching debut under Wes Miller.

The Evansville Purple Aces return three double-digit scorers from last season, and that should be enough to make them contenders in the MVC. Jawaun Newton returns after averaging 13.5 points and 4.4 rebounds, while Shamar Givance averaged 13.3 points and four assists. Noah Frederking is a third double-digit returning scorer, and Evan Kuhlman averaged 3.6 rebounds. The Evansville Purple Aces didn’t play their best ball last season and ended the year very disappointing, but there’s enough returning production to expect growth and more success.

The Cincinnati Bearcats lost their best player in Keith Williams, but they return four of their top-six scorers from a year ago. Jeremiah Davenport returns after averaging 11.7 points and five rebounds, while David DeJulius averaged 9.1 points and 4.2 assists. Mika Adams-Woods averaged two assists per game and Mason Madsen averaged three rebounds. Cincinnati has good guard play and gets a boost in Clemson transfer John Newman III, who started 40 games through three years with the Tigers. The Cincinnati Bearcats played their best basketball last season toward the end, so it will be interesting to see if they can build on that, especially with a new head coach calling the shots.

The Purple Aces are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Bearcats are 10-25 ATS in their last 35 home games and 21-44 ATS in their last 65 games overall. The over is 7-2 in Purple Aces last 9 overall. The over is 17-5 in Bearcats last 22 overall.

The Cincinnati Bearcats are obviously going to be favored in this spot at home, but they have an offense that’s usually sluggish, especially early in the season. The Evansville Aces have guys who can knockdown shots, and they’ll be eager for a strong performance after such a disappointing season last year. I’m not saying Evansville will win this game outright, but the Aces can hang around.
