The Fairleigh Dickinson Knights and the Seton Hall Pirates meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Prudential Center. Fairleigh Dickinson is coming off a 9-15 overall record last year. The Knights finished two spots out of the basement in the Northeast Conference standings. As for the Pirates, they went 14-13 overall last season, good enough for a fifth-place finish in the Big East Conference. Fairleigh Dickinson had something of a forgettable season in 2020-21, going 9-15 overall and 8-10 in NEC play. That left the Knights three spots out of last place in the standings, ahead of only St. Francis-PA and Central Connecticut.
Fairleigh Dickinson saw their season begin at 3-9, but a nice four-game win streak in January and February added some hope. The Knights would skid the rest of the way however, finishing with just two wins in their final eight outings.
Over on the Seton Hall side, they posted a winning 14-13 record last year with a 10-9 record in Big East Conference play. The Pirates landed in fifth place with that effort, behind Villanova, Creighton, UConn and St. John’s in the standings.
The Pirates showed some fire down the stretch in February with a four-game winning streak, but then lost their final four games of the regular season. After an OT 77-69 win over St. John’s in the Big East Tournament, Seton Hall fell to Georgetown 66-58 in the Semifinals.
The Knights are 2-6 ATS in their last eight overall and 1-5 ATS in their last six Wednesday games. Seton Hall is 1-5 ATS in their last six Wednesday games and 1-7 ATS in their last eight overall.
PICK: I’m probably going to stick with Seton Hall. The Pirates’ early-season performance will be a good indicator of where they’re headed as a team. Seton Hall has some big potential weapons in transfers Kadary Richmond, Jamir Harris and Alexis Yetna, but finding an optimal fit for all three of them could take some time. The good news is there’s plenty of depth, though. If Seton Hall can find some early chemistry in this game, I think they’ll be fine on a cover. The Pirates will certainly be an interesting team to watch this year.
