Western Kentucky kicked off their year against Alabama State this past Tuesday. The Hilltoppers trailed by five at the break but surged in the second half for a 79-74 win. Jairus Hamilton led the team with 21 points, one rebound and one assist in 35 minutes.
Game two didn’t go so well for the Hilltoppers. Western Kentucky could only score 23 points in the first half against Minnesota, eventually falling 73-69. Dayvion McKnight was the top scorer for the Hilltoppers in that one, with 34 points, nine boards and four assists.
Over on the South Carolina side, they didn’t have any issues with USC Upstate in their opener, cruising to an eventual 78-60 victory after 43 first-half points. Wildens Leveque and Jermaine Couisnard each scored 14 points and combined for 14 rebounds in the win.
In game two against Princeton, South Carolina scored just 25 points in the first half and couldn’t recover in a 66-62 defeat. Couisnard was the leading scorer with 17 points, and Leveque doubled up on 12 points and 10 rebounds in 32 minutes on the floor.
PICK: I’m going to take Western Kentucky here. The Hilltoppers had an ugly first half (23 points) against Minnesota in their last outing, but surged with 46 second-half points to make for a respectable losing score. WKU had trouble from outside in that one, making just five of 19 3-point tries.
As for South Carolina, they rebounded well (45) against Princeton, but shot just 36.2 percent from the field and a dismal 4-of-26 (15.4 percent) from 3-point range. If the Gamecocks can shoot better here I can see the team hanging around, but I still like WKU on the cover.
