The Canisius Golden Griffins and the St. Bonaventure Bonnies meet Sunday in college basketball action from Reilly Center. Canisius is 0-2 so far this year, falling to Miami-FL and East Carolina over their first two games. As for the Bonnies, they’ve got one win in the books—a blowout victory over Siena. Canisius went into halftime down 37-31 against Miami in their opener, but couldn’t get any closer than that in a 77-67 loss. The Griffins’ top scorer was Malek Green with 21 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the defeat.
Game two against East Carolina was another tough one for Canisius. They posted just 26 points (to the Pirates’ 47) in the first half on the way to an 83-71 defeat. Armon Harried was the lead team scorer in that one, with 22 points four assists and two boards.
Over on the St. Bonaventure side, they’re coming off a 16-5 overall record in 2020-21 with an 11-4 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Bonnies rolled through the conference tournament on the way to a championship, but fell in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament to LSU.
It took St. Bonaventure a while to get going in their opener versus Siena; the Bonnies were only up 36-32 at halftime. St. Bonaventure outscored the Saints 39-15 the rest of the way in a 75-47 win, however. Jaren Holmes and Kyle Lofton each scored 17 points to lead the team.
The Bonnies are 19-5-2 ATS in their last 26 at home and 5-2 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win. St. Bonaventure is 4-0 ATS in their last four Sunday games.
Meanwhile, the Griffins are 7-22 ATS in their last 29 as a favorite and 20-8-2 ATS in the last 30 as an underdog. The over is 3-1-1 in Canisius’ last five versus a team with a winning home record.
PICK: I’m probably sticking with the Bonnies, but staying away. St. Bonaventure wasn’t exactly inspiring in the first half of their opener, but things eventually got better. Still, the Bonnies had a 11-10 assists deficit during the game and only out-rebounded the Saints by a 37-32 margin.
As for Canisius, they were pretty much buried in the first half of the East Carolina game and shot just 32.3 percent from the field. I’m not sure the Griffins can keep up on the scoreboard if St. Bonaventure gets going.
