The Coppin State Eagles and the Virginia Cavaliers meet Friday in college basketball action from John Paul Jones Arena. Coppin State comes into this one at just 1-5 so far. The Eagles got their first win over Loyola-MD in their last appearance. As for Virginia, they’re 1-2 on the season and coming off a loss to Houston. Coppin State hit the skids to open the season, losing each of their first five games. Those defeats came 103-45 to Loyola-IL, 97-72 to DePaul, 81-69 to Rider, 89-54 to Connecticut and 55-48 to UNC Greensboro.

Coppin State finally got into the win column in game six on Wednesday versus Loyola. The Eagles scored 41 second-half points in a 71-49 victory that was much-needed. Kyle Cardaci scored 19 points for Coppin State, and Tyree Corbett doubled up on 15 points and 13 boards.

Over on the Virginia side, they’ve had a choppy season through their first trio. The Cavaliers came out of the gate with a loss to Navy 66-58, but looked much better in game two versus Radford. Virginia won that matchup 73-52.

In Tuesday’s game, Virginia got a tough draw against a good Houston team. The Cavaliers fell behind 36-23 at halftime on the way to a 67-47 defeat. Armaan Franklin was the only Virginia player in double-figures with 11 points and two rebounds in 22 minutes of action.

The Cavs are 1-4 ATS in their last five Friday games and 1-3-1 ATS in their last five after a straight-up loss. Virginia is 1-5 ATS in their last six at home.

Meanwhile, the Eagles are 6-2 ATS in their last eight road games and 5-1 ATS in their last six after an ATS win. Coppin State is 4-0 ATS in their last four overall.

PICK: I’m going to try Virginia, but probably staying away from this one. The Cavaliers have one solid win and two sketchy losses under their belts so far. In the Houston game, Virginia had a mild rebounding disadvantage (34-30) but shot just 34.9 percent from the floor with only six team assists and 17 turnovers.

Virginia is going to need to play a complete all-around game to get the cover here, but if they can get up on Coppin early I don’t think the Eagles will be able to keep the pace.
