Wichita State was able to post victories in their first three wins of the year. The first came 60-57 over Jacksonville State in the opener, then a 64-58 win over South Alabama. Game three was a 65-51 win over Tarleton State that put the Shockers at 3-0.
Wichita State’s first loss came Friday, 82-78 to Arizona. The Shockers were down 40-33 at halftime but forced an extra period after tying it up. Wichita State couldn’t keep up in OT despite 27 points from Tyson Etienne.
Over on the UNLV side, they won their first three games of the year as well. The Rebels took out Gardner-Webb 64-58 in game one, then California 55-52. Game three was another close one, this time 64-62 over North Dakota State.
UNLV’s luck ran out in the Friday game against Michigan. The Rebels were outscored 39-29 in the second half during a 74-61 loss. Leading scorer Bryce Hamilton put up 21 points with two rebounds and two assists.
UNLV is 2-5-1 ATS in their last six Sunday games and 3-11-1 ATS in their last 15 after an ATS loss. The Rebels are 5-16 ATS in their last 21 overall.
Meanwhile, the Shockers are 6-2 ATS in their last eight after an ATS win and 36-14-2 ATS in their last 52 Sunday games. Wichita State is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six after a straight-up loss.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Wichita State. The Shockers hung with a good Arizona team the whole way in their last outing, but fell victim to a spotty 33.8 percent shooting from the floor. Wichita State came up with 11 steals and just 15 turnovers to the Wildcats’ 22.
As for UNLV, they played a decent game against a strong team in their last outing as well. Michigan shot 51 percent with 33 rebounds to the Rebels’ 24 however, so it was tough to keep up. This should be a pretty great matchup, but cover-wise I like the Shockers.
