The UTEP Miners and the New Mexico Lobos meet Sunday in college basketball action from the Pit. UTEP is 4-4 so far this year. The Miners lost to Kansas in their last game. As for the Lobos, they’re sitting at 6-4 and coming off a win over Denver. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
UTEP went 3-1 over their first four games this year. The Miners took out Western New Mexico, Northern New Mexico and Pacific in that stretch. The next quartet was a 1-3 run with losses to UC Riverside, New Mexico State and Kansas.
In the Kansas game back on Tuesday, UTEP fell way behind in the first half 42-21, then couldn’t catch up further in a 78-52 loss. Souley Boum was tops on the team with 18 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Over on the Lobos’ side, their 4-1 run to start the year featured wins over Florida Atlantic, Grambling State, Montana State and Western New Mexico. It’s been a 2-3 run since then with victories versus New Mexico State and Denver.
On Thursday versus Denver, the Lobos didn’t have much trouble. New Mexico got off to a 41-27 start and cruised to the eventual 87-67 win. KJ Jenkins topped the team with 21 points, and Gethro Muscadin had 12 points with 11 boards.
The Lobos are 1-6 ATS in their last six Sunday games and 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 overall. New Mexico is 5-0-1 ATS in their last six after an ATS win.
Meanwhile, the Miners are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 road games and the under is 4-1 in their last five after an ATS loss. UTEP is 2-6 ATS in their last eight as an underdog.
PICK: I think I’m sticking with the Lobos. New Mexico has played well over their last few games (even considering the loss to New Mexico State 78-76 back on December 6) and they’re scoring well. The Lobos have hit 76 or more points in each game, and they shot a solid 43.5 percent from the floor with 48 rebounds in their last outing. I like UTEP to keep the pace pretty well in this one also, but I think New Mexico is the better cover/win option.
