Washington hit a 4-2 run through their first six games this year with wins over Northern AZ, Texas Southern, George Mason and SD State. Since then it’s been a 1-3 run with losses to Nevada, Winthrop and Utah Valley.
Matched up against Utah Valley on December 21, the Huskies posted 27 points in the first half and 25 more from there in a 58-52 loss. Terrell Brown was the leading Washington scorer on 23 points, six rebounds and two assists.
Over on the Arizona side, they hit an 11-game run out of the gate with wins over Northern AZ, UTRGV, ND State, Wichita State, Michigan, Sac State, Oregon State, Wyoming, Illinois, Northern Colorado and Cal Baptist. The Wildcats’ first loss came to Tennessee in their last game.
In the Tennessee game, the Wildcats were down 34-21 at halftime. Arizona fought back 52-43 in the second but couldn’t overcome the gap in a 77-73 loss. Bennedict Mathurin was the top scorer on the team with 28 points and eight rebounds.
The Wildcats are 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight at home and 11-2 ATS in their last 13 Monday games. Arizona is 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 overall.
Meanwhile, the Huskies are 4-1 ATS in their last five road games and 4-1 ATS in the last five Monday games. Washington is 3-7 ATS in the last 10 overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Arizona, even with the thick line. The Wildcats had a bad first half versus a talented Tennessee team in their last outing. The team eventually looked better but by then it was too late to come back. Arizona still shot a solid 44.8 percent from the field with 38 rebounds in the defeat. As for Washington, they’ve been at 64 points or below in three of their last four games. I don’t think the Huskies will have the gas to keep up in this one.
