Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao are facing off at King Fahd Stadium in the final match of the Spanish Super Cup. Real Madrid has had a great game against Barcelona in the semifinals, and even though it took overtime for them to get a win, they did it. Bilbao has had a very good game against Atletico Madrid in the semifinals, and they are deservedly facing Real Madrid for a trophy.
Real has been mighty impressive this season, on both ends, and even though is thought their defense will be on the weaker side, they have proved me wrong. Benzema is of course Real’s best player, he is playing in the best form of his life, and he is both scoring and assisting. Real Madrid scored first in that game against Barcelona, but they conceded before halftime. Once again, Real Madrid has scored in the second half, but they conceded close to the end of the game. In the overtime, Real was the better team, they have had more depth, and they have won this game. As far as LaLiga goes, Real Madrid is still at the top of the table, but Sevilla is getting close, and Real must remain focused if they want the title, and I’m pretty sure they want it.
Bilbao has been impressive on the defensive end, but their offense hasn’t been producing a lot. Luckily for Bilbao, Atletico’s defense is shaky this season, and they took advantage of that in the semifinals. The first half of that game was tough, neither team was willing to let go, but the second half made up for it. We saw 3 goals in the second half, we saw some exciting soccer, and we saw a battle, which Bilbao won. I mentioned Bilbao’s defense, and it’s outstanding, but in the long run, the defense alone will not help them get to the top 4 in LaLiga, but it certainly will help them in a competition like this. In LaLiga, Bilbao is now in 9th place with 28 points, they have scored only 20 goals, but they have also conceded only 17 goals. The good news for Bilbao is they are healthy, they are in a good mood, their confidence is high, and I think they have what it takes to get the title, the question is if they can do it.
The trends are heavily on Real’s side in this matchup, and Bilbao hasn’t won any of their last 3 games against Real Madrid. This is the finals, both teams want the trophy, and they are both good enough to get it, especially Real Madrid. As much as I would love seeing Bilbao winning this trophy because they deserve it, I think it’s missing impossible right now.
