The UC Riverside Highlanders and the Cal State Northridge Matadors meet Saturday in college basketball action from the Matadome. UC Riverside is 9-5 on the year and coming off a win over CSU Bakersfield. As for Cal State Northridge, they played UC Davis in their last game on Thursday. UC Davis hit a 7-4 run in their first 11 games this year. The losses during that time came to San Diego State, San Diego, Saint Mary’s and Oregon. After another loss to UC Irvine, the Highlanders took out Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield in their last pair.
In the CSU Bakersfield matchup on Saturday, the Highlanders trailed by one point at halftime. UC Riverside posted a 38-36 second half and eked out the victory 65-64. Tops in scoring was Dominick Pickett with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Over on the Cal State Northridge side, they hit a 4-8 run over their first dozen outings this season. The Matadors beat only Dixie State, St. Katherine, San Diego and Portland State in that time. CSUN beat Cal Poly, then took two more losses to CSU Fullerton and LBSU.
On Thursday versus UC Davis, the Matadors kept the pace in the first half but fell behind 35-18 from there in a 64-47 loss. Atin Wright was the team’s leading scorer with 14 points, and Onyi Eyisi added 12 points with six rebounds.
CSUN is 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 Saturday games and 0-3-1 ATS in their last four after an ATS loss. The Matadors are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders are 1-5 ATS in their last six Saturday games and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss. UC Riverside is 1-4 ATS in their last five after a straight-up win.
PICK: I’m probably going to try UC Riverside here. The Highlanders haven’t exactly been dynamos on offense lately; they’ve hit 65 points or fewer in each of their last four games. That said, UC Riverside has also gone 3-1 in that time thanks to some nice defensive efforts. I’d like to see the Highlanders post a nice points total in this one—maybe high-60s or so. If they can pull that off, I think UC Riverside will be fine on the other side for a cover.
