The Iona Gaels and the Canisius Golden Griffins meet Friday in college basketball action from Koessler Athletic Center. Iona is currently 18-3 on the year. The Gaels beat Saint Peter’s in their last game. As for Canisius, they’re sitting at 7-15 and coming off a loss to Siena. Iona posted consecutive losses to Belmont and Kansas back in late November, but it’s been smooth sailing from there outside of a one-point loss to Saint Louis in early January. The Gaels are on a seven-game win streak, most recently over Saint Peter’s.
In the Sunday matchup versus Saint Peter’s, the Gaels had a 30-29 deficit at the break. Iona outscored the Peacocks 56-47 from there in an 85-77 comeback win. Nelly Junior Joseph led the team on 17 points with six rebounds in 15 minutes of play.
Over on the Canisius side, they hit a 4-9 run to open the year, then took a postponement break from December 22 to January 11. Since then it’s been a 3-6 stretch with losses to Niagara, Manhattan, Saint Peter’s, Monmouth, Rider and Siena.
In the Siena game, the Griffins were outscored 27-32 in the first half and 38-41 in the second in a 73-65 loss. Tops on the team in scoring was Jordan Henderson with 18 points, and Armon Harried added 11 points with four boards.
Canisius is 4-1 ATS in their last five at home and 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight overall. The Griffins are 1-9-1 ATS in the last 11 after a straight-up loss.
Meanwhile, the Gaels are 18-8-1 ATS in their last 27 road games and 33-16-2 ATS in their last 51 overall. Iona is 9-2-2 ATS in their last 13 Friday games.
PICK: I’m staying with Iona. The Gaels are looking good over their last seven games. They’ve hit 74 or more points in each of those outings and have really only had a couple of close victories (one in OT at Monmouth) in the 7-0 stretch. Considering Canisius hasn’t been able to get past 70 points in any of their last six games, I don’t think the Griffins will be able to keep up on the scoreboard for too long here.
