FSV Mainz is hosting Borussia Dortmund at Opel Arena in round 25 of the German Bundesliga. Mainz is an incredibly good defensive team at home, and they are also scoring an average of 2 goals per game at home as well. Borussia has a lot of injuries, they are missing a ton of players, but they were able to get a win this past weekend.
Mainz has only 1 loss in their last 4 games, and that was against Union Berlin on the road which really tells us a story of two different Mainz’s, one at home and one on the road. Luckily for Mainz, they have been good enough, and consistent enough this season to stay far away from the relegation zone, and they are now in 10th place with 34 points. At home, Mainz has conceded only 7 goals so far, while on the road they have conceded 22 goals. Mainz’s offense isn’t bad, they have scored 35 goals so far, but they need more if they want to reach the Europa League. Burkardt is the leading goalscorer for Mainz with 7 goals. Onisiwo has added 7 assists. There aren’t many games left this season, but Mainz has a solid schedule, and I think we can expect them to climb a spot or two.
Borussia Dortmund has gotten Haaland back from injury, but their entire defense is not gone, some midfielders, and their captain, Marco Reus as well. Overall, Borussia has a lot of talent, they have a lot of firepower, but they just couldn’t handle all the injuries they have had this season, and that has made them very inconsistent. With 53 points, Borussia is now in 2nd place, and they are 7 points behind Bayern, but thanks to Bayern dropping points this past weekend, that difference could be 4 points after this game. It looks like we might have the title race in Bundesliga after all this season. of the 65 goals Borussia has scored, Haaland has scored 16, and he has also added 6 assists. Even though he was out of commission for 2 months this season, no one was able to step up and get even close to Haaland, and it’s clear how much they will miss him when he leaves the team this summer. Marco Reus has added 9 goals and 6 assists. Borussia is not playing in Europe anymore this season, which means they can focus on Bundesliga, and maybe, just maybe, they will be able to catch up to Bayern.
We know that Mainz can score at home, and they can defend as well, but with Haaland against them, they are never safe. I see goals on both sides in this one.
