UTEP opened up the year with a matchup versus North Texas on August 27. That one didn’t go very well and eventually turned into a 31-13 loss. Game two versus Oklahoma didn’t go much better for UTEP. The Miners were pummeled 45-13 in that one.
In last weekend’s game versus New Mexico State, UTEP finally got their first win in a 20-13 outcome. QB Gavin Hardison put up 166 yards and a TD, while Ronald Awatt had 115 rush yards and a score. Tyrin Smith caught five balls for 64 yards and one TD as well.
Over on the New Mexico side, they didn’t have much trouble versus Maine in their 2022 opener. The Lobos scored 21 points in the second quarter alone during a 41-0 win. QB Miles Kendrick posted 170 yards with two TDs and two picks, while Sherod White led the rush on 58 yards and two scores.
In game two versus Boise State, the Lobos ran out of steam. New Mexico didn’t score until the final quarter in a 31-14 defeat. Kendrick had 98 yards and one TD on 9-of-28 passing, and Geordon Porter led the receivers with two grabs for 73 yards and a TD.
PICK: I’m probably going to go with New Mexico here. The Lobos are coming off a rough showing versus Boise State though, and they’ll need a nice bounce-back. The New Mexico offense was stifled for most of the game and they came up with just 123 yards total and eight first downs. The Lobos should match up better in this game, though.
As for UTEP, they did a pretty solid job against a not-so-great New Mexico State team in their last outing but the numbers aren’t much to write home about. The Miners are going to need to crank up the offensive output to stay in range during game four, and I don’t think they’ll quite get there.
