The Toronto Blue Jays and the Philadelphia Phillies meet in MLB action from Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday.
The Toronto Blue Jays will try to keep the momentum going as they fight for wild card positioning in the AL playoff picture. Going into Tuesday’s action, Bo Bichette has 168 hits including 41 doubles, 24 home runs and 89 RBIs while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has 163 hits and 29 home runs with 85 RBIs and George Springer has 21 home runs with 66 RBIs as well this season. Santiago Espinal has 119 hits with 25 doubles and a .267 batting average while Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has 32 doubles on the year. Kevin Gausman will start here and is 12-10 with a 3.45 ERA and 186 strikeouts this season.
The Philadelphia Phillies will hope to secure a wild card spot despite a rough stretch of baseball over the last week. Entering Tuesday’s matchup, Nick Castellanos has 132 hits with 27 doubles and 61 RBIs while Kyle Schwarber also has team-highs of 39 home runs and 81 RBIs as well this season. Alec Bohm’s posting a .289 batting average and a team-high 151 hits while Rhys Hoskins has 28 home runs and 71 RBIs so far this season. J.T. Realmuto also has 78 RBIs as well this season. Zack Wheeler will start here and is 11-7 with a 3.07 ERA and 148 strikeouts this season.
Toronto is 13-5 in their last 18 games overall and 20-8 in their last 28 road games while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 Wednesday games. Philadelphia is 20-7 in their last 27 home games and 2-7 in their last 9 division games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 interleague home games.
I get the case to be made for either side in this game, but I’m thinking the better place to be here is on the over. These are two teams that can really swing the bat, but besides sounding like Captain Obvious, Zack Wheeler’s coming back from the IL and this is a rough spot for him against a Blue Jays team that already tagged him earlier this season for six runs, while Kevin Gausman’s allowed five runs in back-to-back starts. Normally on the marquee I’d say this is a solid pitching matchup and it is, but recent form suggests a high-scoring game so give me the over here.
