The Vanderbilt Commodores and the VCU Rams meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Siegel Center. Vanderbilt is 3-3 overall and coming off a win versus Fresno State. Vanderbilt lost their first two games of the year versus Memphis and Southern Miss, then beat Temple and Morehead State in the next pair. Game five was another loss for the Commodores, this time 75-65 versus Saint Mary’s.
On Thursday versus Fresno State, the Commodores were able to get back to .500 on the year. Vanderbilt scored 31 points in the first half and 36 in the second for a 67-59 win. Liam Robbins led the way on 20 points and seven boards.
Over on the VCU side, they also won their first two games of the year, beating Manhattan and Morgan State. The Rams lost to Arizona State in the next game, , then beat Pittsburgh and lost to Memphis.
Matched up against Kennesaw State on Saturday, the Rams were down 34-28 at the break. VCU fought back with a 36-27 advantage in the second for a 64-61 win. Jayden Nunn led the team on 24 points, and Zeb Jackson had nine points.
PICK: I’m probably going with Vanderbilt. Not going near this one, though. The Commodores shot 40.7 percent with 15-of-22 (68.2 percent) from the line in their win over Fresno State. Vanderbilt was out-rebounded 45-35 however. Vanderbilt hasn’t been scoring terribly well this year; they’ve hit 67 or fewer points in four of six games. As for VCU, they haven’t been spectacular on offense this year either with fewer than 70 points in four of their last five. This one’s probably going to be a close outcome; I’m leaning Vanderbilt but not touching it.
