Texas State went 2-2 over their first four games this year, losing to Washington State and UTSA with wins otherwise over Mid-America Christian and Rhode Island. The Bobcats won the next pair over California and Southern Utah.
On Saturday versus Hawaii, the Bobcats took a 29-28 edge into the locker room. Texas State was outscored 44-36 in the second half for a 72-65 loss. Mason Harrell topped the team with 23 points, and Brandon Davis added 12 points.
Over on the Lamar side, they hit a 3-1 run out of the gate this year. The Cardinals took wins over St. Thomas HTU and Lindenwood in that time. Lamar fell to Western Carolina and McNeese State in consecutive outings after that.
The Cardinals’ slide continued on Sunday versus SMU. Lamar was drilled 38-23 in the first half and limped to a 75-50 blowout loss. Valentin Catt was the leading scorer with 16 points. Nate Calmese added 11 points with two assists.
PICK: I’ll probably be going with Texas State. Also probably not going near this one, though. There’s not a ton to like, however it should be a competitive matchup. Texas State hasn’t been great on the scoreboard so far this year. The Bobcats have 65 points or fewer in three of their last four games—including two totals in the 50s. Lamar hasn’t fared much better lately: they’ve got just 107 combined points over their last pair. This one should end up with a reasonable total however, and I like Texas State to stick out a tight cover.
