The West Virginia Mountaineers and the Texas Longhorns meet Saturday in college basketball action from Moody Center. West Virginia is fresh off a Wednesday matchup versus Iowa State. In that one the Mountaineers powered out a five-point victory. As for Texas, they’re sitting at 19-5 following a loss to Kansas on Monday. West Virginia Mountaineers

The Mountaineers started out the year on a 10-6 run through their first 16 outings. Over the next seven, West Virginia went 4-3 with wins over TCU, Texas Tech, Auburn and Oklahoma alongside losses to Oklahoma, Texas and TCU.

In the Iowa State matchup on Wednesday, the Mountaineers took a 36-30 edge into halftime. West Virginia cruised on 40 more points in the second for a 76-71 win. Tops in scoring was Kedrian Johnson with 22 points and six assists.

Texas Longhorns

Over on the Texas side, they managed to go 14-2 over their first 16 games this year. The Longhorns are on a 5-3 run since then, taking out Texas Tech, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, Baylor and Kansas State during that stretch.

In the Kansas game on Monday, Texas took a 42-35 deficit into halftime. The Longhorns didn’t end up getting any closer on a 46-45 second-half run and lost 88-80. Leading scorer Marcus Carr put up 29 points, and Timmy Allen added 18 points.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’m going to stick with Texas in this one. The Longhorns are coming off an up-and-down effort versus Kansas, shooting 47.6 percent from the floor with 14-of-18 (77.8 percent) from the line, 33 rebounds and 15 turnovers. Texas has been scoring well lately with a nice 69 or more points in six straight outings (a 4-2 run). The last time these teams met up back on January 21, the Longhorns secured a 69-61 win at WVU Coliseum. Texas closed well in that one with a 43-33 second half. I like the Longhorns to bounce back from the Kansas loss and play well in a cover here. That said, West Virginia is riding high after their win over Iowa State on Wednesday. Should be a fun game to watch regardless.
