Western Michigan and UMass meet Saturday in Week 6 college football action from McGuirk Alumni Stadium. Here’s a UMass vs Western Michigan prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Western Michigan Broncos vs UMass Minutemen pick.
Western Michigan Looks for Third Straight Win
Western Michigan has all kinds of confidence right now and they have won two straight games. Two games ago Toledo it wasn’t the most dominant game, but they ended up picking up the 14-13 victory. In the last game against Rhode Island, Western Michigan scored 47 points, and they ended up winning in blowout fashion. The offense was impressive, but even more impressive was the defense holding Rhode Island to -5 rushing yards. Broc Lowry was under center and he completed 15 of his 20 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 14 times for 52 yards and a touchdown. Ofa Mataele was the top rusher finishing with 10 carries for 60 yards and two touchdowns.
Western Michigan on the season is averaging 19.4 points while their defense is giving up 24.2 points per game. The offense is ranked 118th while the defense is ranked 74th. Western Michigan is going to need to make another statement with the defense.
Why the Western Michigan Broncos will win
- Massachusetts has lost each of its last 13 games as an underdog.
- Western Michigan has won each of its last five October games against non-AP-ranked teams.
- Western Michigan has covered the spread in five of its last six games as a favorite.
- Massachusetts has failed to cover the spread in 13 of its last 17 home games.
What an Awful Season for UMass
It has been an awful season for UMass and they are coming off another loss. UMass has lost four straight games, and that includes a one point loss to Bryant a team they just can’t be losing to. Over the last two games against UMass and Iowa they have been outscored 89-13. It’s hard to win games when you have a starting quarterback that is as inaccurate as AJ Hairston. Against Missouri, he completed 11 of his 31 passes for 75 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
The running game also couldn’t get anything going, and that included Rocko Griffin who finished with five carries for 23 yards. In this game, if they want to win, they need to find a way to get more success out of the quarterback position. If that’s Hariston, or it’s someone else, no matter what they need to find a way.
Why the Massachusetts Minutemen will win
- Western Michigan has lost 13 of its last 16 road games.
- The home team has won each of Western Michigan’s last three games.
- The underdog has covered the spread in 10 of Massachusetts’ last 13 games at Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
- Western Michigan has failed to cover the spread in six of its last eight road games.
Western Michigan vs UMass Prediction
I don’t actually think Western Michigan is all that talented, but they are still a whole lot better than UMass. The biggest issue with UMass is their talent just isn’t good enough under center, and they are going to really struggle to get any sort of offense going here. Western Michigan is averaging only 19.4 points, and they are going to go well over that number here. UMass is going to struggle to reach six points, and it’s going to be Western Michigan that is going to end up cruising here. Back Western Michigan to win this game and cover the spread.
