The Appalachian State Mountaineers meet the Elon Phoenix Saturday in week 3 college football action from Kidd Brewer Stadium. Elon matched up against Campbell last weekend. The Phoenix eked out a one-point win to even their record. As for the Mountaineers, they played Miami-FL this past weekend. In that one, Appalachian State took a tough two-point defeat. Elon took a difficult loss against Wofford in their first game this year, coughing up 21 second-quarter points on the way to a 24-22 defeat. Phoenix quarterback Davis Cheek put up 312 yards with two TDs and a pick in the loss, and Chandler Brayboy had 112 yards and a score.
In week two versus Campbell, the Phoenix scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to squeeze through in a 24-23 victory. Cheek had 269 pass yards with two touchdowns in that one, and Jaylan Thomas managed 55 yards from 19 carries.
Over on the Appalachian State side, their opener came against East Carolina. The Mountaineers were victorious 33-19 in that one. App State QB Chase Brice had 259 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, while Nate Noel and Camerun Peoples combined for 226 rush yards and two scores.
In their second game versus Miami-FL, Appalachian State had a 14-12 lead going into halftime but couldn’t hold on in a 25-23 loss. Brice put up 199 yards with a TD and a pick in the defeat, and Peoples finished with 95 yards and a score from 17 carries.
PICK: I’m going to take App State in this one. The Mountaineers fought hard against a pretty capable Miami team in week two, posting 326 total yards of offense and an average of 4.5 yards per play. Appalachian State gave up 175 rushing yards on the other side along with 25 first downs.
As for Elon, they gave up a few big strikes in the passing game (three touchdowns) but overall were pretty solid when it came to the run. I think the Phoenix can hang around for a while here but ultimately this should be Appalachian State’s game to cover.
