The West Virginia Mountaineers meet the Virginia Tech Hokies Saturday in week 3 college football action from Milan Puskar Stadium. The Hokies played Middle Tennessee in their last game. In that one Virginia Tech posted a blowout victory. As for West Virginia, they’re coming off a game versus LIU. The Mountaineers secured a huge shutout win to even up their record. The Hokies played North Carolina in their opener game this year, hanging on for a tense 17-10 victory. Virginia Tech quarterback Braxton Burmeister finished with 169 yards, one TD and one interception in that one. Raheem Blackshear was the the lead receiver with 66 yards on three grabs.

In the week two game versus Middle Tennessee, the Hokies scored in every quarter on the way to a 35-14 victory. Quarterback Braxton Burmeister put up 142 yards and a touchdown, and Raheem Blackshear led the rushers with 53 yards and two TDs from 10 carries.

Over on the West Virginia side, they opened up their season against Maryland in a 30-24 defeat. Mountaineers QB Jarret Doege put up 277 yards with one TD and two picks in that one, while Leddie Brown posted 17 carries for 73 yards and two touchdowns.

In the second game versus LIU, West Virginia jumped out to a 38-0 halftime lead and kept it going afterward for a huge 66-0 blowout win. QB Jarret Doege had 259 yards and three scores in that one, and Garrett Greene managed 98 yards with two scores off 14 carries.

The Hokies are 2-5 ATS in their last seven non-conference games and 1-6 ATS in their last seven road games. Virginia Tech is also 1-5 ATS in their last six after a straight-up win.

Meanwhile, the Mountaineers are 6-0-1 ATS in their last seven home games and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 in September. West Virginia is also 1-5 ATS in their last six versus the ACC.

PICK: I’m going to take Virginia Tech. The Hokies posted 383 yards of total offense in their week two game, notching 24 first downs, a 5.7 yards per play average and an 8-of-13 mark on third and fourth down efficiency. As for West Virginia, they destroyed LIU with 542 yards of offense, 29 first downs and a 6.2 yards per play average.

This matchup will be tougher for both teams; they’re each coming off blowouts against overmatched teams, and I do expect this one to be close most of the way. Virginia Tech has been pretty good on defense so far though, and I like that aspect to carry the Hokies to a cover here.
