Tennessee State opened the year with a 1-3 skid that featured losses to Jackson State, Grambling State and Southeast Missouri State. The Tigers hit a win streak over Austin Peay, TN Tech, Eastern Illinois and Murray State but then lost to TN-Martin.

In the Austin Peay game, Tennessee State gave up points in every quarter and couldn’t score until the fourth themselves in a 36-7 loss. QB Chayll Garnett put up 95 yards with one TD and a pick, and Jalen Rouse led the rush with 52 yards from 18 carries.
Over on the Mississippi State side, they went 2-2 over their first four with losses to Memphis and LSU. The Bulldogs would produce a 3-2 record over their next five with wins over Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Kentucky alongside losses to Alabama and Arkansas.

Mississippi State played Auburn this past Saturday. The Bulldogs were down 28-10 at halftime but from there outscored the Tigers 33-6 for a 43-34 win. QB Will Rogers had 415 yards and a whopping six scores; Jaden Walley had 87 yards receiving from seven grabs.

PICK: Probably sticking with Mississippi State, but not going near it due to the crazy line here. The Bulldogs were crazy good through the air against Auburn, passing for 415 yards and posting 31 first downs. The third-down conversion rate wasn’t great (3-of-10) but Mississippi State held on to the ball for 35:01 in a pretty nice overall effort.

As for Tennessee State, their game against Austin Peay couldn’t have gone a whole lot worse. The Tigers gave up four turnovers and only notched 194 yards on offense. It’s going to be difficult to bounce back from that.
