Marshall managed to win their first two games this year over Norfolk State and Notre Dame, but fell in the next pair to Bowling Green and Troy. The Herd then beat Gardner-Webb, lost to Louisiana and took out James Madison over the next trio.
In the Coastal Carolina game, Marshall was down 21-0 after the first quarter. The Herd made some progress during the rest of the game but still lost 24-13. QB Cam Fancher managed 320 yards on 19-of-36 passing, and Khalan Laborn put up 59 yards and a score on 16 carries.
Over on the Old Dominion side, their year began at 2-2 with wins over Virginia Tech and Arkansas State alongside losses to East Carolina and Virginia. The Monarchs went 1-2 over the next three with a win over Coastal Carolina between losses to Liberty and GA Southern.
Over the weekend versus Georgia State, Old Dominion had the score tied at 14 coming out of halftime. The Monarchs gave up 14 points in the third quarter in a 31-17 loss. Hayden Wolff threw for 257 yards with two scores and a pick. Javon Harvey caught three balls for 124 yards and a TD.
PICK: I’m probably going to stay with Marshall. The Herd had a solid offensive day with 407 yards (320 passing) against Coastal Carolina. The mistakes got to Marshall, however; the team committed 11 penalties and lost a pair of fumbles. That said, if Marshall can clean up their act a bit they should be fine in this matchup.
As for Old Dominion, they gave up 413 total yards and 24 first downs to Georgia State in their loss over the weekend. The Monarchs had just 11 first downs and two turnovers as well. I don’t think they’ll be able to bounce back well enough to cover in this one.
