Arizona State kicked off their season with a 40-3 win over Northern Arizona, but then hit a rough losing streak. The next four games were losses to Oklahoma State 34-17, Eastern Michigan 30-21, Utah 34-13 and USC 42-25.
The Sun Devils stopped the skid with a win over Washington in their last game. Arizona State scored 21 points in the second quarter along the way to a 45-38 result. QB Treonton Bourguet logged 182 yards with three touchdowns, and Xazavian Valladay carried 23 times for 111 yards and a score.
Over on the Stanford side, they took out Colgate in their opener 41-10. The Cardinal similarly hit a losing skid over the next quartet, falling to USC 41-28, Washington 40-22, Oregon 45-27 and Oregon State 28-27.
Matched up against Notre Dame on Saturday, the Cardinal took a 10-0 lead into halftime, scoring in every quarter en route to a 16-14 win. QB Tanner McKee posted 288 pass yards, and Casey Filkins rushed 32 times for 91 yards and a touchdown.
PICK: I might take a stab on Arizona State. Probably staying away from this one. The Sun Devils are coming off a pretty good effort against Washington, even though they were outpaced in several statistical areas and committed 10 penalties. Arizona State has had some tough matchups thus far and it’s tough to tell how they’re going to play. That said, the Sun Devils have generally done well versus comparable opponents this year.
As for Stanford, they did a nice job against Notre Dame over the weekend, bagging 385 total yards 21 first downs and just two penalties. I like the Cardinal to put up another solid effort in a tight game here.
