The SMU Mustangs and Houston Cougars meet Saturday in week 10 AAC college football action from Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Houston is coming off a matchup versus South Florida. The Cougars won that game in a blowout. As for SMU, they played Tulsa in their last outing. In that one the Mustangs won by 11 points. Houston started the year out at 2-2 with wins over UTSA and Rice alongside losses to Texas Tech and Knasas. After a loss to Tulane, the Cougars managed consecutive victories over Memphis and Navy in the next pair.

In the South Florida game, Houston had a 28-14 lead going into the third quarter and hung on for the 42-27 win. QB Clayton Tune put up 380 yards and four touchdowns on 31-of-37 passing. Stacy Sneed added 10 carries for 60 yards and two scores.

Over on the SMU side, they beat North Texas and Lamar before skidding in three straight losses to Maryland, TCU and UCF. The Mustangs managed to beat Navy 40-34, but then fell 29-27 to Cincinnati in game seven.

Matched up against Tulsa over the weekend, SMU went into halftime with a 24-7 lead. The Mustangs scored 21 more points in the third during a 45-34 win. QB Preston Stone had 219 yards with a TD, and Tyler Lavine rushed 17 times for 72 yards and three scores.

PICK: I’m going to try SMU here. The Mustangs had a great game versus Tulsa over the weekend, notching 468 total yards (310 passing), 24 first downs and an 8-of-16 rate on third-down tries. SMU has scored well over their last three outings, with 27 or more points in all three and 40 or more in two of them.

As for Houston, they notched 490 yards with 23 first downs and 7.7 yards per play in their win over South Florida over the weekend. The Cougars went 7-of-11 on third downs and had just one turnover but also committed 10 penalties. All things considered this should be a pretty fun matchup, and I think SMU can power out the cover.
