The BYU Cougars and Baylor Bears square off Saturday in week 2 college football action from LaVell Edwards Stadium. Baylor is fresh off their first game versus Albany. In that matchup the Bears took a blowout victory. As for the Cougars, they played South Florida in their opener. BYU ended up winning in a blowout as well. Baylor had a pretty nice season in 2021. The Bears went 12-2 overall and 7-2 in Big 12 play. That would leave Baylor in second place, and they took the conference championship with a win over Oklahoma State. The Bears finished off with a win over Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl.
Back on Saturday versus Albany, the Bears scored at least 14 points in each quarter during a 69-10 blowout victory. Quarterback Blake Shapen managed 214 yards and two scores on 17-of-20 passing. Richard Reese added nine carries for 62 yards and two TDs.
Over on the BYU side, they played pretty well last season but their campaign ended on a down note. The Cougars went 10-3 overall, behind only Notre Dame among independents. In the Independence Bowl, BYU lost a tough one 31-28 to UAB.
In their 2022 opener versus South Florida, the Cougars scored 28 points in the first quarter alone during a 50-21 victory. QB Jaren Hall managed 261 yards with two TDs and a pick. Christopher Brown led the rushers on 13 carries, 135 yards and one TD.
PICK: I’m going to try Baylor here. We should have a pretty fun matchup in store however, and it’ll obviously be more evenly-matched than either team’s last outing. Baylor posted 573 total yards versus an overmatched Albany squad, adding 8.4 yards per play, 29 first downs and just two punts in the rout. The eight penalties were unwelcome but other than that there isn’t much to complain about.
As for BYU, they bagged 575 total yards themselves against USF, posting 8.3 yards per play and 27 first downs. Baylor should serve as a nice test to see where this Cougars team is sitting, and I think it’ll be a close one most of the way.
