The Northwestern State Demons and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Reynolds Center. Northwestern State kicked off their season against Oklahoma on Tuesday. In that one the Demons fell by 18 points. As for Tulsa, this will be their first game of the year. The Hurricane finished 11-12 last season, in the middle of the AAC standings. Northwestern State posted an 11-18 record in 2020-21, finishing 9-7 in Southland Conference play. The Demons landed in fifth place in the conference standings with that effort. Northwestern State beat New Orleans in the Quarterfinals of the Southland Tournament before falling to Nicholls in the Third Round.

In their Tuesday opener versus Oklahoma, Northwestern State kept up well in the first half with a 28-25 deficit at the break. The Demons were outscored 49-34 in the second half, however. Kendal Coleman finished with 19 points, six rebounds and a steal to lead the team.

Over on the Tulsa side, they finished at 11-12 last year with a 7-9 effort in American Athletic Conference games. The Hurricane ended up in seventh place in the AAC standings, ahead of USF, Temple, Tulane and East Carolina.

Tulsa had a good run in December and January but faltered down the stretch. The Hurricane lost five of their final seven outings and hit some cancellation hiccups as well. The year ended with a 77-70 defeat by Tulane in the AAC Tournament.

The over is 4-1 in the Demons’ last five overall and 4-1 in their last five road games. The under is 5-2-1 in Northwestern State’s last eight Wednesday games.

Meanwhile, the Hurricane are 1-4 ATS in their last five Wednesday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five at home. Tulsa is 1-5 ATS in their last six overall as well.

PICK: I’m going to stick with Tulsa. Generally speaking, the Hurricane are expected to post a similar finish to last year’s campaign, landing somewhere around .500 on the year. With Elijah Joiner gone there are some production question marks with Tulsa but they’ve got a good lineup in the front court that should be hard for opponents to manage.

As for Northwestern State, they lost steam in the second half but overall put up a decent effort against Oklahoma. It’ll be interesting to see what they can put together here.
