The Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens meet Monday in college basketball action from Germain Arena. App State is 2-2 on the young season and coming off a close loss to Charlotte. As for Delaware, they’re 2-1 so far and took out La Salle in their last game. Appalachian State couldn’t handle Iona in their opener and started the season with a 65-53 loss. The Mountaineers were able to bounce back with wins over East Tennessee State 69-67 and William Pence 98-49 in their next pair.
Back on Thursday versus Charlotte, the Mountaineers fell behind 42-30 at the break and couldn’t come back despite a second-half surge in a 67-66 loss. Justin Forrest put up 17 points with three rebounds in that one.
Over on the Delaware side, they took a punch from Davidson in their opener. The Hens lost big in that one 93-71 but played better in the next pair. Those were wins over Siena 83-63 and La Salle 85-82.
In the La Salle victory, Delaware was outscored 40-35 in the second half but took the overtime period 15-12. Ryan Allen topped the team with 35 points and four rebounds, while Dylan Painter added 19 points and 12 boards.
The Hens are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 neutral-site games and 2-7 ATS in their last nine after a straight-up win. Delaware is 0-4 ATS in their last four Monday games.
Meanwhile, the Mountaineers are 5-1 ATS in their last six neutral-site games and 0-4 ATS in their last four overall. The under is 5-2 in App State’s last seven neutral-site games.
PICK: I’m going to stay with App State. The Mountaineers need to tighten up a bit after that close win over Charlotte, though. Appalachian State allowed 52.8 percent shooting and 17 assists to the 49ers, but to their credit the Mountaineers held up in rebounding (32-32) and turnovers (11-13). Delaware got outfoxed on the boards by La Salle 43-35 in their last game, so that should be a point of emphasis for App State here.
