The Portland Pilots and the Montana State Bobcats meet Friday in college basketball action from McDermott Center. Portland is 5-1 so far this year and coming off a win over Portland State. Portland came out of the gate this year with a 76-60 loss to Arizona State. The Pilots hit their stride after that however, taking out Willamette 122-78, Alcorn State 62-58, AR-Pine Bluff 86-74 and Morgan State 74-63 in their next four.

Game six was another victory for Portland, this time over Portland State. The Pilots posted a 37-20 edge in the first half and cruised to a 69-54 result. Top team scorer Chris Austin finished with 15 points, nine boards and three assists.

Over on the Montana State side, they had an intense game against Colorado in their opener but ultimately fell in overtime 94-90. Game two was the Bobcats’ first win over Rocky Mountain, then came a loss to South Dakota State.

Montana State had a slim 36-33 deficit versus New Mexico at halftime in their last appearance, but ultimately couldn’t keep up in an 81-78 loss. Tyler Patterson topped the Bobcats on 16 points, one rebound and one assist.

Montana State is 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral-site games and 12-5 ATS in their last 17 Friday games. The Bobcats are 3-10-2 ATS in the last 15 overall.

Meanwhile, the Pilots are 1-4 ATS in their last five neutral-site games and 4-11 ATS in their last 15 overall. Portland is 4-9 ATS in their last 13 after a straight-up win.

PICK: I’m going to try Portland in this one. The Pilots have scored pretty well lately, with 69 or more points in four of their last five outings. Portland shot a solid 43.5 percent from the field in their last game, collecting 51 rebounds and 13 team assists along the way.

As for Montana State, they shot well themselves (47.5 percent) against New Mexico, so this could turn into a high-scoring affair if both teams are on. Should be a pretty good matchup.
