The UConn Huskies and South Carolina Gamecocks meet Sunday in the college basketball Women’s NCAA Tournament National Championship at the Target Center. The UConn Huskies look to win their 12th title in school history and first since 2016. The South Carolina Gamecocks look to win their second title in school history and first since 2017.

The UConn Huskies are averaging 74.8 points on 48.2 percent shooting and allowing 54.6 points on 35.6 percent shooting. Paige Bueckers is averaging 14.6 points and 3.9 rebounds, while Christyn Williams is averaging 14.6 points and 2.3 assists. Azzi Fudd is the third double-digit scorer and Caroline Ducharme is dishing 1.3 assists. The UConn Huskies are shooting 34 percent from beyond the arc and 68.8 percent from the free throw line. The UConn Huskies are allowing 28.8 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 38.8 rebounds per game.

The South Carolina Gamecocks are averaging 71.1 points on 42.6 percent shooting and allowing 50.5 points on 32.7 percent shooting. Aliyah Boston is averaging 17 points and 12.4 rebounds, while Destanni Henderson is averaging 11.1 points and 3.9 assists. Zia Cooke is the third double-digit scorer and Laeticia Amihere is grabbing 3.7 rebounds. The South Carolina Gamecocks are shooting 30.8 percent from beyond the arc and 67.6 percent from the free throw line. The South Carolina Gamecocks are allowing 26.9 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 48.2 rebounds per game.

The South Carolina Gamecocks are the rightful favorites here as they’ve been the best team in the country from start to finish, they’ve lost once since January, and they have the best player in the country in Boston. This is also a game where UConn will miss the size and rebounding of Dorka Juhasz, as the Gamecocks have many bodies to throw down low. We also can’t ignore that South Carolina rocked UConn 73-57 back in November, a game where the Huskies got outscored 16-3 in the fourth quarter.

With all that said, it’s hard to turn down UConn in the underdog role, an elite program that finds a way more times than not. UConn simply can’t be counted out with shot makers such as Bueckers and Williams leading the way. UConn is also a perfect 11-0 when making the title game.

Give me the points.
